Work Statement

The ability to see beyond the ordinary or mundane is what interests me most as a way to explore the deeper reaches of the human psyche. I enjoy using objects, environments, or experiences that appear familiar but are in some way transformed through a certain perspective. Surrealism and Spanish and Dutch Baroque painting as well as science fiction and horror in literature, television, and movies are my main influences. Reoccurring themes in my work are death and life cycles and the passage of time. In some cases the line between death and life is difficult to ascertain and time is frozen. While the subject of some of my paintings and photography is easily identifiable, others are less so even with a clear title. Sometimes what we expect is not what we're given; it's the personal experience and use of our imagination that counts not whether or not we fully understand what we see or think we see.
